"I don't know what the ball-to-strike ratio was tonight, but I felt like it couldn't have been good. I missed a lot of spots. It might not have been balls, but I just left balls over the plate. That's just as bad as a ball."

 

This will be his first-ever appearance against the Red Sox.

 

"I felt good," Beachy said. "I'm just a little upset with myself for wasting too many pitches. I'd like to get deeper into games."

 

The undrafted Beachy, who has never faced the O's, has compiled 81 strikeouts through the first 13 starts and 71 1/3 innings of his career.

 

Britton lost his second straight start on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, who reached him for four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to raise his ERA to 3.38 on the year.

 

"[The coaching staff and I] look at the last couple of starts, and there's a handful I could have won easily," said Britton. "We think about that. It's not that I haven't pitched well. There are games that I haven't pitched well at all and deserved to lose. But at the same time, I knew throughout some of these stretches, I threw the ball [well]. It just hasn't worked out for me in the win-loss column."

 

Hudson (7-6) compiled six strikeouts, allowed eight hits and three runs to continue his dominance against the Orioles. The righty entered the night with a 3-14 mark with a 6.24 ERA in 19 starts against the AL since coming over to Atlanta.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."

New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
